These were my main concerns when I first heard about the building. Just the blocking of light to that side of the school buildings will be horrible... it's already dark out.. how will air quality and light affect the playground and ground. And likewise, what will kids be seeing? The play area will be in what will end up being an alleyway. It's just really sad that his eye for development is for more transient accommodations instead of affordable housing.
I can't imagine circumstances under which anyone of sound mind would consider it a good idea to build a hotel 10' from an elementary school. We should be doing better than this for our children. Dear Planning Board and Council, please, please, please do not approve this ridiculous project! Mr. Coston, please help Bar Harbor by building affordable housing instead of more HOTELS.
Oh truly, what should concern for Bar Harbor's children amount to when there is personal profit to be made in the proliferation of temporary 'lodgings.' To what account the well being of our communal next generation when there is a private empire to be built on transitory accommodations? Why should not Bar Harbor celebrate another local boy made good - this one profiteering on land as another does on water? Is this not the purpose of being intergenerational stewards of Eden - to build personal wealth in the exploitation of natural resources at the expense of vulnerable populations? Why shouldn't tactical donations buy influence to sweep away the objections of native heirs and 'interlopers' alike who dare challenge the worst of 'island ways' - in hopes of giving the better angels of Bar Harbor half a chance.
Thank you Bar Harbor Story, and school committee and staff for raising concerns of this Hotel Horrorburger’s location abutting and looming over the very expensive new K -8 school. Hearing that that this ghastly project is being stopped would be very welcomed news. Even more welcome news would be to hear that much needed project such as a low profile, inviting affordable year round housing for our residents is being planned. You could choose to do this change, Mr. Stephen Coston. You could be a leader in the rebuilding of Bar Harbor as a village for year round residents, not a despised destroyer. And, we could still have a well managed and thriving tourism.
A couple of things I'm concerned about. 1. This construction has already harmed the marvelous amount of wildlife that visits Conners Emerson. Last year, the kids were treated to a fawn bedding down and a woodchuck family in the yard. 2. As people have mentioned security and potential sex offenders being in close proximity, I am also worried about open windows or balconies giving school shooters easy access to our children in the same way the Las Vegas shooter used his hotel vantage point to do harm. We do not need more hotels in town, we need small family residences.
This is evidence that we NEED a moratorium on more transient lodging. I wish the town council would wake up. Unfortunately I’ve got little faith in any of them to do the right thing.
Let’s take a pause on developing more and figure out what we as a community want for our future.
Mr Coston: we don’t want this. Please don’t force it on us.
I think the next Town Council meeting is November 19th, NOT the 17th.
You were right! I've fixed it. Thank you so much, Jim!
Jim! Thank you! I'll go doublecheck and fix it.
