It is right and proper for Bar Harbor to take a stance in support of LGBTQ rights. The rainbow painted crosswalks are a good message.
Our neighbor Leonard Leo has been and continues to be a prime mover in driving government suppression of human and civil rights, focusing these days on LGBTQ rights. Primarily through corruption of the courts and through dark and dirty money funding of antidemocratic causes with the goal of repurposing our democratic republic as a clerical fascist state.
However, the BH Town Council entirely supported and took no public action against disgraced former BH Town Manager Kevin Sutherland's suppression of the First Amendment protected and Maine Criminal Code compliant 'google Leonard Leo' outreach project - which used chalk paint on public sidewalks and roads. In fact, the Council continues to refuse to make an accounting of Sutherland's diversion of public resources to private interests.
Bar Harbor needs a better town government code of ethics which goes beyond financial conflict of interest. And MDI needs some public newspapers to better follow the APA code of ethics as a counter to government intransigence.
