ON THE AGENDA
Every week we document Bar Harbor town government, school, and other similar meetings that we know of. Please let us know if we’ve missed something. Also, sometimes things are on the town calendars and are cancelled or rescheduled, so make sure to double check before you head over!
All the meetings take place at the Bar Harbor Municipal Building at 93 Cottage Street unless otherwise noted. And they usually have a time for public comments. This is not true about executive sessions, which are closed to the public.
So, go! Be informed! Be part of the process. You deserve to be.

MDI SCIENCE CAFÉ: Gene Therapy: A Potential Cure for Sickle Cell Disease
Mar 11 at 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM
Edward Benz Jr., M.D., directs the NIH's Cure Sickle Cell Initiative. and will speak about how the promise of gene therapies is being realized today. This is an online-only Zoom event.
In 2018, the National Institutes of Health launched an effort to speed the development of cures for sickle cell disease, naming Vice-Chair of the MDI Bio Lab Board of Trustees, Edward Benz Jr., M.D. as its Director.
In December 2023, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration approved the first cell-based CRISPR-Cas9 gene therapy, called CASGEVY, for the treatment of sickle-cell disease in patients 12 years and older.
This notable development heralds the long-sought use of CRISPR gene-editing technology in medical treatments or therapeutics. The FDA approval offers meaningful hope to patients afflicted with sickle-cell disease whose therapeutic options are otherwise limited. A heritable, life-long, and often lethal blood cell disorder, sickle-cell disease affects an estimated 100,000 individuals in the United States, most of whom are African Americans.
Dr. Benz will outline and explain how CRISPR can improve the drug development process by directly increasing or decreasing a specific gene’s activities, to determine which gene products are responsible for a given disease and targetable for therapy. With CASGEVY, genes that affect the function and shape of red blood cells are edited in a manner that appears to cure sickle cell disease for a year or more. The Cure Sickle Cell Initiative is a collaborative, patient-focused research effort designed to accelerate promising genetic therapies.
Online-only Zoom event. To register.

VIRTUAL WRITE ON! WRITING GROUP
Want support for your craft? The Write On! writer’s group has been meeting at the Jesup since 2014, and remotely during the pandemic. Each meeting, members may bring in up to 1200 words to read for feedback, and in turn offer feedback to others. Although each member doesn’t get to read work every time, the group shares the time fairly. The group meets on Zoom, and hold in confidence what is shared. This group welcomes adults 18 and up writing in many genres. There’s no homework–the only commitment is two hours on Saturday mornings.

Author Talk with “Kristie Billings, Sea Witch: Photographs and Poetry from a Mainer Growing Up”
Join us for an author talk, reading, and Q&A with Kristie Billings.
Kristie Billings comes from a long line of lovers of the sea: fishermen, clamdiggers, and sardine packers. The ocean is home. Her book, Sea Witch: Photographs and Poetry from a Mainer Growing Up, is comprised of images and words from the sea, nature, folk art, dolls, loss, grief, love, acceptance, rage, music, life. From punk rock to menopause to swimming with seals!
Kristie is a poet, a photographer, and a year-round swimmer. She is currently living in Ellsworth, Maine, and a native of Stonington, on Deer Isle. A great lover of music, of art, and life, Kristie is drawn to beauty, even in the most ordinary, mundane way. She is drawn to what others may pass by, unnoticed.
Free and open to the public. Books will be for sale, courtesy of Sherman’s Maine Coast Book Shop.

The Art of Penobscot Bay with Carl Little, Online only
On Tuesday, March 12th at 5:30p.m. the Library will host “The Art of Penobscot Bay” co-author Carl Little for an in-person program.
In his slide talk, Carl will offer a choice sampling of paintings from Art of Penobscot Bay. He will share the process of assembling the images in the book, including the challenges and the rewards—and how he collaborated with his brother David on what is their fourth joint publishing adventure. Registration is encouraged. For Art of Penobscot Bay, brothers David and Carl Little, well-known stewards of Maine art, have selected art and artists, from history and today, that celebrate the myriad of inlets, islands, coves, and peninsulas—the “nooks and corners” of the region. Above all, they sought out art infused with a remarkable representation of place by more than 120 artists who have embraced the area and its people. Art of Penobscot Bay includes artists from the 19th century through the 21st century, including Fitz Henry Lane, Waldo Peirce, Edward Hopper, William Zorach, John Marin, Emily Muir, Greta Van Campen, Alex Katz, Eric Hopkins, and Amy Peters Wood. For questions or assistance registering, call 207-244-7065, or email programs@swhplibrary.org.

BAR HARBOR:
According to the town’s website, “Meetings that are broadcast live can be viewed at home by watching Cable Access Channel 7 or 1303 (Spectrum Cable only) and online at Town Hall Streams.”
“Things We Do in Bar Harbor” and “On the Agenda” is mostly curated by me looking for things happening in the upcoming week, which takes a lot of time and I truly do not know all that is going on.
If there’s something in Bar Harbor (or MDI) that you’d like me to mention, please let me know, because I’m definitely always missing some events every week.
