This week, I’m trying something new and combining these two features so that you have less slightly mail in your inbox and you don’t get sick of us. There’s a poll below (no pressure, but it’s cool if you answer) so that you can let me know if you are good with this combination of our two weekly features or if you prefer them separated.
Thanks so much for your help!

BAR HARBOR FIRE DEPARTMENT
To check if Bar Harbor Fire Department is currently hiring, please go to the town’s jobs page.
But even if it isn’t, you can become a call member
Becoming a call force firefighter requires extensive training, hard work, and dedication to the community. We rely on call force firefighters to respond quickly to emergencies, to perform firefighting duties, and to provide assistance and support to career firefighters. To be a fall force firefighter is to have a chance to aid and serve the community, which is an extremely rewarding experience.
Business Narcan Education Interest Survey
Deputy Chief John Lennon is offering free Narcan training to island businesses.
By equipping individuals with naloxone and training to identify and respond to an overdose, the potential delay between the onset of an opioid overdose and the delivery of life-saving care can be reduced to seconds.
Training takes less than 45 minutes with time for questions & answers. There was a business training in the council chambers of the Bar Harbor Town Office in the fall, with hopes to do the same again for businesses soon.
If interested in participating please fill out this survey
There are three upcoming Narcan trainings with John Lennon of the Bar Harbor Fire Department. Those are:
Saturday May 13 @ 10 a.m. | Southwest Harbor Library
Wednesday May 24 @ 3 p.m. | Machias Savings Bank Community Room, Bar Harbor (this session is business/restaurant focused, but still open to anyone)
Wednesday May 31 @ 5 p.m. | Jesup Library, Bar Harbor
According to a release by the town, “By equipping individuals with naloxone and training to identify and respond to an overdose, the potential delay between the onset of an opioid overdose and the delivery of life-saving care can be reduced.
“All attendees will be given Narcan for themselves to carry and for their businesses if they so choose.”
For more info contact: John Lennon 207-288-1771, Email: johnlennon@barharbormaine.gov

Get Your Deck Safety On!
May is Deck Safety Month
Each year, the North American Deck and Railing Association (NADRA) raises awareness about the importance of checking your deck by promoting National Deck Safety Month. Homeowners can take advantage of resources and tools from the NADRA webpage (nadra.org) to ensure the safety, security and longevity of their decks. The Town of Bar Harbor Code Enforcement office has posted a 10-Point Deck Safety Checklist on their webpage. The checklist provides a step-by-step guide to visually inspecting the deck for safety concerns such as corroding fasteners, decaying materials, loose railings, inadequate lighting, and more. The checklist is a helpful tool to assist homeowners. The Code Enforcement Office is available to discuss decks and other possible safety concerns around your home. Please contact Michael Gurtler, Deputy Code Enforcement Officer at 207-288-3329 or mgurtler@barharbormaine.gov for further information.

Doderick Tugman is a 4th-year student at the College of the Atlantic. Originally from Jamaica but raised in NYC, Doderick is interested in the field of human sexuality and sexual health education. Their senior project focuses on the identity formation of black queer individuals with a research emphasis on the experiences of black queer people in predominately white spaces–work, colleges, high school, church, etc. Their research focuses on black queer people across the United States, including Maine, and how they navigate the white gaze, homophobia, transphobia, parental neglect, and neglect from institutions. Doderick's presentation will explore the dominant themes of their research, which they use to offer practical suggestions for creating more diverse and inclusive communities.

Short-story cycle writing program with author Laura Bonazzoli
Please join us at the Jesup Memorial Library for a short-story cycle writing program with author Laura Bonazzoli on Thursday, May 11th from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.
What is a short-story cycle, why write one, and how? Recently, Morgan Talty, author of Night of the Living Rez, gave a shout-out to short-story cycles on Maine Public Radio’s Maine Calling, noting that they’re an increasingly popular genre of fiction. But why? What exactly is a short-story cycle? What are its characteristics, and what advantages—and challenges—does it offer readers? And if you’re intrigued by the possibility of writing one, how might you begin?
Join Rockport author Laura Bonazzoli to explore these and other questions you might have about this fascinating genre. Laura will also read excerpts from her own short-story cycle, Consecration Pond, which was described by Publishers Weekly as “a solid, meditative collection of interconnected short stories that weave together seemingly disparate narratives into a satisfying and cohesive whole. Consecration Pond was published by indie press Toad Hall Editions in August 2022, and is available at local bookstores and directly from the publisher at toadhalleditions.ink. Books will also be available at the event.
Laura Bonazzoli’s fiction has appeared in Evening Street Review, Exposition Review, The Sandy River Review, and many other publications. She has also published poetry and personal essays in dozens of literary magazines and several anthologies. After the publication of her stories “Prayer of the Bell” and “Spring Ice,” she began working on a collection of linked stories that all take place on a pond in Maine. That collection became the short-story cycle, Consecration Pond.
This event is a hybrid program and registration is required to attend either in person or on Zoom. Register at jesuplibrary.org/events/bonazzoli or email eventsignup@jesuplibrary.org.

Book Discussion!
Please join us at the Jesup Memorial Library for a book discussion. We will discuss the title, The Bonobo Sisterhood: Revolution through Female Alliance by Diane Rosenfeld on Wednesday, May 24th from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Please come to the front desk if you would like to request a copy of the book. Light snacks and tea will be served. All are welcome.
The Bonobo Sisterhood is a revolutionary call to action for women and their allies to protect one another from patriarchal violence. Diane L. Rosenfeld, founding director of the Gender Violence Program at Harvard Law School, introduces us to a groundbreaking new model of female solidarity one that promises to thwart sexual coercion.
Urgent, timely, and original, The Bonobo Sisterhood harnesses the power of the #MeToo movement into a road map for sex equality in humans. Our closest evolutionary cousins, the bonobos have a unique social order in which the females protect one another from male aggression. The takeaway? Evolutionarily, bonobos have eliminated sexual coercion and enjoy a more peaceful, cooperative, and playful existence. We have much to learn from them.
Rosenfeld explores the implications of the bonobo model for human societies and systems of governance. How did law develop to elude women’s rights so consistently? What difference does it make that we live in a patriarchal democracy? And what do bonobos have to offer as living proof that patriarchy is not inevitable? Most importantly, how can women break down barriers among themselves to unleash their power as a unified force? Rosenfeld has answers.
The Bonobo Sisterhood takes us through real-life stories from the courtroom to the classroom and beyond, charting a new vision of a collective self-defense among women and their allies. It offers an action plan accessible to everyone immediately. This is an open invitation to anyone who wants to challenge the status quo. It starts with the power inherent in each of us knowing that we have selves worth defending, and awakening that power for ourselves and for our sisters. We now have a new model for real change, Rosenfeld reminds us. It’s time to use it. The Bonobo Sisterhood forges a path to create and discover a new meaning of equality, liberty, and justice for all.
This event is in person only and registration is required to attend. Please register at jesuplibrary.org/events/bonobo or email eventsignup@jesuplibrary.org.

Another season of free produce for seniors begins as Maine Senior FarmShare grows and evolves
Whether you prefer tomatoes, beet greens, or sugar snap peas, there’s nothing better than fresh, local fruits and vegetables in the summer - especially when they’re free. By participating in Maine Senior FarmShare, income-eligible Maine seniors can receive $50 worth of credit to spend on fruits and vegetables at select farms and farmers’ markets.
Healthy Acadia is partnering with Maine Senior FarmShare and Maine Federation of Farmers Markets to launch a new Senior FarmShare program at the Bar Harbor Eden Farmers’ Market. Senior Farm Share is designed to support lower-income older adults in accessing healthy food while also ensuring that Maine farmers are fairly compensated for the food they grow. To participate in Senior FarmShare, a person must be a Maine resident; be 60 years old or older, or 55 years old or older for Native Americans; and meet income guidelines. More than 100 farms in Maine, distributed across all 16 counties, are authorized to participate in MSFP.
Enrolling with the Bar Harbor Eden Farmers Market Senior FarmShare program will enable participants to spend their $50 credit on produce from any vendor’s stall over the course of the season, rather than choose a single farm in the spring. The market is open on Sundays from 9 a.m. to noon from Mother’s Day weekend until the end of October. If you would like to enroll with the Bar Harbor Eden Farmers’ Market, visit the info booth at the farmers’ market beginning on May 20th, or check for updates at https://healthyacadia.org/ha-sfs.
Senior FarmShare participants must re-enroll every year: if you enjoyed being a part of the program in the past, don’t forget to reach out to the farm of your choice to sign up again this year. To find an authorized farm in your area, visit www.maine.gov/dacf/ard/seniorfarmshare and search for a farm stand near you, a farmer who attends your favorite farmers’ market, or a farmer who makes deliveries, based on your needs and preferences.
Participating farms by county:
Backstage Farm (at the Blue Hill Farmers’ Market or at their farm stand in Blue Hill)
Calyx Farm (at the Northeast Harbor Farmers’ Market)
Northern Bay Organics (at the Stonington Farmers’ Market or at their farm stand in Penobscot, or contact them about delivery options)
Simon’s Hancock Farm in Hancock
Amber’s Best (at their farmstand in Stetson, or contact them about delivery options)
Morgan Bay Farm in Surry
Rime nor Reason Farm (at the Calais Farmer’s Market or at their farmstand in Charlotte)
Far Out Farm (at the Lubec Farmers’ Market)
Smithereen Farm (at the Lubec Farmers’ Market or at their farmstand in Pembroke)
Amber’s Best (at the Machias Valley Farmers’ Market, or contact them about delivery options)
Bristol’s Redbird Farm (at the Milbridge Farmers’ Market, at their farmstand in Harrington, or contact them about delivery options)
Folklore Farm (at their farmstand in Cherryfield, or contact them about delivery options)
